VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

    Thank you for your interest in volunteer opportunities at SOTM, Inc. Life Skills Center. We are very proud of the many volunteers providing their times and talents in making a difference in the community. SOTM, Inc.  is able to fulfill its mission because of its volunteers. There are many ways you can make a difference by giving of your time. Our volunteers are truly partners in caring.

Volunteer Requirements

While everyone is welcome to become  a volunteer, for the safety of our clients, on-Site volunteers at SOTM, Inc. are required to:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Submit a completed SOTM, Inc. volunteer application with all attachments.

  • Submit a copy of your driver’s license and social security card to be used for a criminal background check.

  • Pass a tuberculosis test. Volunteers must submit a recent negative TB test results before application is considered complete.

  • Attend a volunteer orientation session.

STEP 1:  Complete the volunteer application

Applications can be completed online or by downloading a PDF file  or by contacting the SOTM, Inc Volunteer Coordinator, at 972-709-1180 or send an e-mail to volunteer@sotminc.com

Criminal Background Check - All SOTM employees and volunteers are subject to a criminal background check conducted by the Volunteer Center of North Texas.

 For anyone having contact with youth-per government regulations and requirements we conduct the following:

County Criminal Record; State Criminal Record; Federal Criminal Record; Sexual Predator Registry; Wants and Warrants

DHHS Registry (Department of Health and Human Services); Social Security Verification

 Once your application has been processed our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you about upcoming orientations.

 STEP 2:  Attending Orientation

The goal of orientation is to teach potential volunteers about the agency's structure, the programs and services offered, and to help them determine what volunteer opportunity best fits their schedule and interests. Once you have turned in your completed volunteer application, you will be contacted to schedule your Orientation held monthly 2nd Thursday.

 STEP 3:  Complete Appropriate Training

Volunteer training is available to any potential volunteer who has completed step one and two. You will complete the appropriate training for your specific volunteer functions.

Position Title

PUBLIC RELATIONS ASSISTANCE

Overview

Seeking an energetic individual to assist the Public Relations Department.  Training provided.

  • Exceptional people skills

  • Good speaking /writing communication skills

  • Must be well informed of the organization’s goals and purpose.

  • Able to make SOTM, Inc. visible to the public

  • Ability to present the organization to the public in a positive light.

Duties

Must be able to determine the best way to reach the audience through various media:

            Direct Mail       Newsletters     Websites    Television     Press Release    Newspaper   Speeches    Radio  Personal contacts

  • Able to prepare press releases
  • Study and guide the development of SOTM, Inc. Advertising and promotional program.
  • Able to make recommendation to the Board concerning effective Public Relations skills for SOTM, Inc.
  • Able to prepare PR budget.
  • Escorting media as needed and providing media approved information
  • Distributing marketing materials to organizations throughout Tri-cities
  • Writing for marketing and/or PR materials, website, general correspondence as needed.
  •  Assisting in special event planning and coordination.

 

Qualifications

Must be organized and detail oriented.

Must be well informed of the organization’s goals and purpose.

Must be mature and able to manage work independently.

Must have strong written and verbal communications skills.

Must be computer literate and well-versed in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Position Title

PROGRAM ASSISTANCE

Overview

SOTM seeks an experienced event-planning individual to head its program department.  Responsible for the development and execution of various special events and programs.  This position requires creativity skills, and good delegating skills. Training provided.

Duties

§  Event planning experiences

§  Recruiting of volunteer to help with program

§  Ability to work with diverse groups

§  Able to meet deadline

§  Keep participants informed of upcoming programs

§  Organize luncheons, brunches, and banquets (as needed)

§  Able to prepare "program budget"

§  Interacting with speakers, and sending thank you letters to speakers

§  Distributing marketing materials to organizations throughout Tri-cities

§  Writing for programs and/or PR materials, website, general correspondence as needed.

§  Assisting in special event planning and coordination.

Overview

An outstanding trusting individual is needed to head the finance department.  Ideal candidates will be detail oriented.  Great organizational skills.  Computer literate with spreadsheet a plus.  Training provided.

Duties

§  Responsible for giving an account for the organization's cash flow

§  Recruiting of volunteer to help with Finance team

§  Ability to work with diverse groups

§  Able to meet deadline

§  Present financial report to the Board of Directors

§  Set-up periodic meetings with other directors/board and supporters

§  Review and verify completeness of all documents delivered by the Finance Committee

§  Keep bank journals

§  Handle bank problems

§  Make daily deposits

§  Responsible for paying bills

§  Prepare financial report

§  Assisting in special event planning and coordination.

§  Present grant progress to the Board of Directors

Position Title

LIFE SKILLS COACH CO-FACILITATOR

Overview

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: A Life Skills Coach will support the overall development, implementation and supervision of the Life Skills Training to help reach its goals. Life Skills Coach keeps the group moving.  Setting the “tone”, facilitating the conversation, stimulating caring, and assisting the decision-making process, the Life Skills Coach helps the group function well.  Plans and conducts group meetings. Ability to show a spirit of caring, nurturing. Training provided.

 

Duties

§  Non-judgmental-Primary responsibilities to educate and counsel

§  A demonstrated ability to listen, empathize, and accept others.

§  Meeting regularly with group members. (Avoid missing sessions)

§  Modeling and training members in independent IESP life skills.

§  Providing feedback in the form of log sheets, behavior analysis describing interactions with other group members.  

§  Turn in Progress Notes each week with your signature by the designated time.

§  Communicate swiftly and thoroughly with your co-workers who rely on your information for their department.

§  Communicating with program coordinator about problems or concerns.  

§  Participating in in-service trainings.  

§  A demonstrated openness to receiving feedback and supervision as needed.

§  Assisting with program promotion

§    Making public presentations or otherwise marketing various groups.

§    Assisting in training other group facilitator in future trainings.

Minimum Job Qualifications

·         Must be well informed of the organization’s goals and purpose.

·         Employee must have CPR and First Aid.

·         Must have strong written and verbal communications skills.

·         Must be organized and detail oriented. Candidates for this position must also be able to motivate others and function with minimal supervision

·         Exceptional people skills.  Must work well with clients, families, other professionals and the community at large

·         Employees understand that they must be able to pass a background check.

Position Title

PEER COUNSELOR  

Overview

Candidates must complete the training before serving as Volunteer Peer Counselor.  Must demonstrate competency in the areas of listening skills, utilize good counseling techniques such as empathy, confidentiality and conflict resolution. Must demonstrated openness to receiving feedback and supervision as needed. Volunteer Peer Counselors help clients explore their options given their available resources and formulate problem-solving plans. They also serve as informal counselors, offering clients the opportunity to discuss issues surrounding relationships, feelings, attitudes, personal goals and growth.  The goal is to help clients cultivate independence, competence, self-confidence and self-esteem. Training provided.
