SOTM Practicum and Internship

Your internship will provide you with a supportive, structured learning environment for acquiring clinical experience and practical on-the-job training. You will be called on to synthesize material from previous course work, to utilize theories and techniques, and to begin to develop a personal and professional style of relating effectively to clients, client’s families, agency staff members, and other professionals.

During Internship
ü 15-20 hours per week of work with SOTM
ü Work a minimum of one evening per week
ü Co- facilitating a group
ü Mentor new interns
ü Participate in weekly clinical staff meetings
ü Present a case each semester of internship during clinical meetings
ü Hours of 300 or more may be completed within two concurrent semesters
ü Upon completion of practicum/internship hours, turn in completed:
Student self-evaluation
Student site-evaluation
Practicum hours Excel log
ü Final Evaluation to be submitted three weeks prior to last team meeting for signature
Title:
Counseling Intern
Job Summary: Performs
supervised individual and group counseling, and crisis intervention. Assist
with intakes and appropriate referrals.
May perform other related
tasks that are a part of the agency's operation. Work is supervised by
professional staff, and individual clinical work is supervised by a licensed
counselor.
Reports to: Counseling Coordinator and assigned supervisors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
§ Conducts intake interviews with clients who request counseling services and completes the required paperwork.
§ Provides individual and group counseling to clients on a scheduled basis or through crisis intervention.
§ Provides clinical supervision to a practicum student.
§ Provides outreach workshops and training.
§ Maintains up-to-date progress notes on clients and supervisees.
§ Consults with supervisors and staff as needed.
§ Represents the department and division at public relations events as requested.
§ Interacts with staff and students in a professional and ethical manner.
§ Commits to set hours per week internship.
§ Participates in supervision and training with openness to learning and receiving feedback.
Non-essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs additional job-related duties and responsibilities as requested.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education : Must be a current student in a counseling program. Must be certified
by the academic program as being ready for a practicum / internship.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and basic skills in counseling practices and methods.
o Ability to plan, implement, evaluate and report activities conducted.
o Ability to communicate effectively in writing and computer generated documents.
o Ability to communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.
o Ability to travel to meetings, and counseling sites.
o Ability to establish rapport with others as a requisite for healthy and therapeutic relationships.
o Ability to present oneself in an appropriately personable and professional manner to clients and staff.
o Ability to receive and utilize constructive feedback regarding performance, presentation and relationships with others.
o Ability to be both consistent and flexible as circumstances warrant.
o Ability to effectively weigh and evaluate personal needs, client needs and the aims and policies of the agency and to respond and negotiate these competing needs as appropriate.
o Ability to remain calm and supportive in crises when provided with appropriate supervision.
o An enhanced level of self-awareness as to how you relate to others.
o Ability to communicate via computer email and text.
Requirements:
SOTM has certain requirements that a prospective intern MUST complete during internship with our agency. Individual and group supervision is provided in addition to ongoing training. Although enrollment is done throughout the year, students are encouraged to contact SOTM before the end of their current semester.
